Clear navigation helps visitors understand what you offer and reach the next step without searching. In Workspace, navigation is managed from Website Pages.
Plan the main menu
Start with the pages a new visitor genuinely needs. A simple photography website might use Home, About, Services, Portfolio and Contact. Add Pricing, Information or Book only when they support the way you want clients to move through the site.
Use familiar, concise labels. Creative wording can suit your brand, but the destination should remain obvious.
Add a page to navigation
- Open Website Designer, then Website Pages.
- Create a page or edit its details.
- Enter the Navigation Text.
- Turn on Display in site navigation.
- Save the change.
A page can be published without appearing in your navigation. This may suit a campaign or direct-link page, but make sure important pages are not unintentionally hidden.
Create a dropdown menu
A parent menu item creates a dropdown menu in your website navigation. The parent item becomes the label visitors see in the main menu, while the pages arranged beneath it appear as options in the dropdown.
For example, you could create a parent menu item called Services, then place Weddings, Portraits and Schools beneath it.
To create a dropdown menu:
- Open Website Designer, then Website Pages.
- Select Add Parent Menu Item.
- Enter the Navigation Text you want to use as the dropdown label.
- Save the parent menu item.
- Arrange the relevant pages beneath it.
- Open your website and test the dropdown on both desktop and mobile.
Visitors can open the dropdown from your main navigation. Depending on their device, they may hover over, click or tap the parent menu item.
Keep dropdowns short and logically organised. Avoid several levels of nested navigation, as complicated menus can be difficult to use—particularly on phones.
Add a URL link
Select Add URL Link when a menu item should lead to another URL rather than a standard website page.
Enter the complete destination URL and check that the link opens the correct location. Consider whether sending visitors away from your main website supports what they are trying to do.
Set the display order
Arrange menu items in the order visitors are most likely to need them. Keep a clear enquiry or booking route easy to find, then check your navigation on both desktop and mobile.
Make navigation clear and easy to use
Use link wording that explains the destination. “View wedding collections” or “Contact the studio” is clearer than “Click here”. Avoid using colour alone to identify links, and make sure menu labels and buttons remain readable against their backgrounds.
Check that dropdowns and important links are easy to find and use on both larger screens and touch devices. Keep the route to your main enquiry, booking or gallery action straightforward.
