Workspace supports Afterpay—known as Clearpay in the United Kingdom—as a payment option in Client Galleries and Print Shop. Afterpay is provided through your connected Stripe account and is available only when both your Stripe account and the order are eligible.
How Afterpay works
Afterpay lets an eligible customer split a purchase into instalments. The customer is redirected to Afterpay to authorise the payment, then returned to the checkout.
The full order amount, less applicable fees and Workspace costs, is made available in your Stripe account upfront. Your usual Stripe payout timing still applies; you do not need to collect the later instalments yourself.
Where Afterpay is available
Stripe currently supports Afterpay for businesses in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States. Afterpay transactions are domestic: the customer and your Stripe account must be in the same supported country, and the payment must use that country’s local currency.
For example, a New Zealand photographer can offer Afterpay to an eligible New Zealand customer paying in New Zealand dollars. Customers outside that region can continue to pay using another available payment method.
Order limits in Workspace
Workspace currently makes Afterpay available for eligible orders from 1.00 up to the following totals:
- Australia: AUD 2,000
- Canada: CAD 2,000
- New Zealand: NZD 2,000
- United Kingdom: GBP 1,000
- United States: USD 2,000
Stripe may support different maximums outside Workspace. If an order is outside the Workspace range, Afterpay will not appear and the customer can use another available payment method.
Which Workspace products are eligible?
Workspace offers Afterpay for eligible orders containing Queensberry-supplied physical products. It does not appear when an order contains digital downloads or custom products. Workspace checks this automatically at checkout.
Stripe eligibility
Stripe decides whether Afterpay is available for your account based on factors including your country, account status, business category and the products or services being sold.
Make sure the business information and merchant category in Stripe accurately describe what you sell. Do not change your category simply to gain access to Afterpay. If Stripe does not make Afterpay available, or you are unsure whether your sales are eligible, contact Stripe for guidance.
Fees, refunds and disputes
Afterpay processing fees are deducted by Stripe and are usually higher than standard card-processing fees. Fees vary by country and can change, so check Stripe’s current local payment-method pricing before setting your retail prices.
Stripe currently allows an Afterpay payment to be refunded for up to 120 days after the original payment. Refunds and disputes are managed through Stripe. Afterpay provides some protection for particular customer fraud and repayment issues, but this does not remove your responsibility to respond to a dispute or provide evidence when requested. See Stripe’s current Afterpay and Clearpay documentation for the latest requirements.
How to enable Afterpay
- Connect Stripe to Workspace. Follow How to set up Stripe for Workspace and complete your Stripe account setup.
- Enable Afterpay in Stripe. Open Payment methods in your Stripe Dashboard. Enable Afterpay if Stripe shows it as available for your account.
- Turn on Afterpay in Workspace. Go to Settings > Shopping Cart Settings. Once Stripe confirms that Afterpay is active, switch on Enable Afterpay using Stripe.
Afterpay will then appear automatically at checkout when the customer, currency, order value and products are eligible. If it does not appear, the customer can select another available payment method.
